Retro Kolkata Exclusive : Introducing Seshankita Chakraborty, Fashion Model & Influencer

© Seshankita Chakraborty
For an early morning shoot, I try to get a good sleep the night before. A fresh mind is very important for a good shoot. If my mind isn't at rest, I can't give my 100% and, that would be my discredit. Also, I keep my makeup very dewy, light and minimal yet glamorous by using a good mascara for my eyes, subtle eyebrow lining, with nude eyeshadows and nude/dark lipcolour, depending on the outfit I am wearing.

RK : First of all, thanks a lot for accepting our invitation for an interview. Please say something about you. About your career as a fashion model & influencer. How did you get started?

Seshankita : Thank you so much for sending this extremely interesting questionnaire my way! I'm originally from Assam, did my schooling till 10th there and then shifted to Kolkata. I did my graduation in Physics Honours from Lady Brabourne college. I love painting, reading novels, writing and designing. I love makeup and I am a professional makeup artist as well! I am an old soul and I just love creativity. I had participated in an international beauty pageant, Empress Universe, last year and I won till the state level, and also special recognition award for my tasks in the pageant. That's when I felt the motivation to explore this field. However, I started working from march of this year, when I went for a pre-holi photowalk and the photographs came out really nice! There has been no looking back since then! I am grateful.

RK : You have an exceptionally unique look. Where does your style savvy come from, and where do you get your inspiration?

Seshankita : Ah, thank you! That practicality about styling, I think, is innate, in me. I have always had a flair for innovative, creative stuff and I think my love for reading has expanded my horizon for putting that imaginative detail in every work that I do. It helps me stay ahead and always on the edge. Since, I do all the styling for all of my shoots, so I really experiment and try new ideas and explore different trends. I am a huge fan of Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, more for the way they carry themselves, and own whatever they wear! I think confidence is the most important key for being stylish and owning your look.

RK : What are the three essential elements of fashion that every girl should have?

Seshankita : It has to be 3 Cs for me, and any other woman or man out there : Creativity, Confidence and comfortability and these must actually reflect in one's attitude first, and then in his/ her styling, dress, and look.

RK : Would you please share with us one fashion prediction you foresee for 2019 or 2020 – either mainstream or alternative?

Seshankita : If I talk about mainstream fashion then I think people, these days, are more fashion-conscious, and they tend to look for comfortability and multiple-use of a product. For instance, if a top or a tunic can be worn in five different ways, or styled with two or three different accessories, then there will be more buyers for that product than another product which can only be worn once or has no/minimal variation. That's what I'm definitely rooting for my lookbook this year. For alternative fashion, however, things are really unpredictable because it's a broad spectrum. There can be infinite looks, varied styles and totally dramatic composition ranging from bohemian, gothic, fusion, ethnic, vintage or retro so on and so forth. There's a whole different world out there, however I am hooked to Bohemian and fusion looks. I find it really chic and comfortable. And, it's trending!

RK : What’s your beauty regime? Would you like to share some of your best beauty secrets?

Seshankita : I keep it very simple. Lots of water, yoga, optimum sleep and being happy! Also, home-made food. I try not to take stress as it just ruins our mental peace and yields no productive results. Fruits are my best friends! I am more inclined to home-made face packs and hair packs. They absolutely work wonders with zero side effects!

RK : How do you stay in Shape?

Seshankita : Yoga, cycling and a healthy diet.

RK : Do you have a skin care routine?

Seshankita : Not particularly but I try to keep it very natural. I hardly go for hair spas or facials in salons. I use home-made remedies and keep myself hydrated. Since, I have an oily T-zone, I try to protect my skin from heat and dust, as much as is possible.

RK : Do you have any Beauty/Skin Care tips or Tricks to look fresh and rested for early morning Photo shoot?

Seshankita : For an early morning shoot, I try to get a good sleep the night before. A fresh mind is very important for a good shoot. If my mind isn't at rest, I can't give my 100% and, that would be my discredit. Also, I keep my makeup very dewy, light and minimal yet glamorous by using a good mascara for my eyes, subtle eyebrow lining, with nude eye shadows and nude/dark lipcolour, depending on the outfit I am wearing. Also, I take good care of my hair, that's half of the look done right!

RK : What is your mantra to not give up in life and not to give in to any peer/external pressure?

Seshankita : Believe in yourself and always do the right thing, however difficult it is! Everyone achieves success at their own pace. Comparison is a vice; it only pulls you down so I never compare or compete. Anyone doing better job out there is an inspiration for me. I cheer for fellow models and influencers and when you have that positivity in you, you'll hardly find any peer pressure. The only rival I have is me myself. I have only one goal : to get better than what I was yesterday. I believe in failures. For me, success is nothing but improved failure. So there is absolutely no question of giving up when you have that burning passion in you. I can't stay with mediocrity; there's so much to do, to learn, to achieve and that is the only thing that pushes me out of my bed every morning and as for the bad days I have, I clap for myself. I am my biggest fan! This world will always judge us, no matter what. It depends on how we react. Just take the best out of an ugly situation, channelise it into something productive and you'll be unstoppable! That's my mantra, there you go!

RK : Which of your forthcoming projects are you eagerly looking forward to?

Seshankita : I've a short film lined up and it's a very interesting and quite relatable to me. I'm very excited for the role. Also, I'm really lucky to be working with some of the best photographers of Kolkata but unfortunately I really cant talk elaborately about these assignments but they're going to be very creative and unique. And, I can't wait to start working on them.

RK : If you had to look at the ever-changing world and change something; wave a magic wand and fulfill any wish, what would it be?

Seshankita : If it would be just one wish and meant for the greater good, then I would definitely try and change people's perspective and mindset. I believe people, these days have lost compassion and kindness. I think a little compassion could do wonders! Humanity is almost dead and a peaceful world is all we need right now, in order to strive and work towards a better, progressive future.

RK : Do you have any upcoming events or announcements you wish to share?

Seshankita : Definitely. I've been working on something very unique, fashionable and chic currently. It's a teamwork and I am quite excited for it to be over with. However, I must be tight-lipped about it or else, all the fun goes out of the door. I have been suggested by many of my friends as well as my followers in social media have appreciated my work and style and have wanted to see more of it, so that's exactly what I'm glued to right now!

RK : Give us 5 fun facts people might not know about you yet.

Seshankita : 1. Since, I'm into modelling, people tend to get the idea that I'm an extrovert. However, I'm quite shy and an ambivert! However, I love public speaking.

2. I love writing. I write poems secretly and I've drafts written for a book I dream of publishing someday.

3. I am a home buddy! I am very content with a great book, good music and my favourite bowl of corn and cheese pasta.

4. Usually, I meet people who think I lack brains because I'm just a pretty face but I used to top in my academic life and I love Quantum Physics!

5. I love adventure! I'm literally scared of nothing- water, mountains, night safaris, ghosts, nothing!

RK : We (Retro Kolkata) are trying to build one single stage for all the artists, because we believe that artists are the most beautiful creation of God and geographical boundary can never break their unity and harmony. Please say something about our initiative and any special message for your followers.

Seshankita : It's amazing, actually, the work you people are doing. I think, we as artists need to break stereotypes. Like, for one, I'm often confronted with this ideology that modelling is all about looking good and posing when so much of brain work , hardwork and planning goes into the execution of putting together a look. I myself sit with the photographers, plan each and every detail, understand the concept, learn the pros and cons of setting up a style, and then finally put it to execution. So, that's a stereotype I'm constantly breaking with my content and by giving me, among many others, this platform to voice my opinions, Retro Kolkata, you're doing a fabulous job. I hope you grow in bounds and leaps and I wish you the best in all your future endeavours. And, as for my followers, I just want to thank them for sticking by me, appreciating my work and encouraging me to get better, each day. I'm humbled by all the love you keep sending my way!
