In a world that is constantly evolving, individuals like Hakon Anshus stand as timeless icons, gracefully embracing the shifts of time and fashion. As a beacon in the modeling industry, he embodies the raw and rugged beauty that defies age stereotypes, encouraging us to embrace the full spectrum of life's journey. Today, we have the privilege to delve deeper into the world of this trailblazing figure, where each tattoo tells a story, each photograph is a testimony to his journey from the serene landscapes of Norway to the bustling global catwalks. Here's our candid conversation with Hakon, an individual who truly represents a harmonious blend of experience and style.
Retro Kolkata : Hakon, your journey as a fashion model in Norway and internationally has been quite impressive. Can you share with us how your modeling career started?
Hakon : Everything started actually by a coincidence when a friend of mine called me 8 years ago and asked if I wanted to do a dress shoot for a local shop. I would get a suit as a payment. I thought, "cool, I've never done that before, so I can do that." Then, after seeing the campaign, a local agency called me and asked if I wanted to be a part of them. And I said yes. Then a national agency that also had an office in Berlin called me to see if I wanted to join them, which I agreed to. Then the snowball started to roll on.
Retro Kolkata : You have that quintessential 'silver fox' look that has been celebrated in recent years. How has the industry's perception of age and beauty evolved over your career, and how do you feel about being one of the figures leading this movement?
Hakon: Previously, the industry heavily favored young, thin, and traditionally "perfect" models, but there has been a growing demand for inclusivity. This has led to the recognition and celebration of beauty across various age groups, sizes, ethnicities, and body types. I think that is a good thing. The modeling industry has started to embrace older models and recognize the beauty that comes with age. Brands and fashion houses have been featuring older models in their campaigns and runway shows. Models are proving that beauty and style are not limited to youth and are breaking the age barriers that were once prevalent in the industry. I am very proud to be one of the figures leading this movement.
Retro Kolkata : Your portfolio showcases a variety of styles, from essential menswear to more rugged looks that show off your tattoos. How would you describe your personal style, and how does it influence the types of roles you take on as a model?
Hakon: Personally, I probably have a more rugged style. I'm more of a rock and roll dude. As for the influence on the types of roles I take on as a model, I think it is the uniqueness that people want to see. Being yourself. Dare to stand out, regardless of what people think of you! Every one of us is unique, so dare to show it! (Only dead fish follow the stream)
Retro Kolkata : You've worked with several different agencies, including Emporio Models, Trend Models Management, and Nordic Model Agency. Could you tell us about these experiences and how each agency has contributed to your career's growth?
Hakon: I work with several modeling agencies all over the world; most are located in Europe. My MA Emporio is in LA. They are very good at taking care of their models and following up. They are all nice people. However, it is also a lot about personal relationships and contacts in this industry, as in other industries. It's about give and take. Helping each other. So be nice, and you will probably get something back sooner or later.
Retro Kolkata : Could you share one of your most memorable modeling experiences? It could be a specific shoot, a travel experience, or a moment that stands out in your career.
Hakon: One of my most memorable shoots is perhaps a shoot I did as a lead role for Audi. Audi's new RS6 model that we shot in Valencia, Spain. It was a very big shoot. The car model was not launched yet, so there was a very strict security arrangement to keep the paparazzi away. The shoot took place among other places at a disused heliport, with a crew of about 40 people. With photographers, videographers, assistants, runners, make-up artists, stylists, guards. I had my own make-up trolley and we had 3 chefs cooking for us all day. It was very cool. The female lead was Eva Salvarez and we have since kept in touch and have become very good friends.
Retro Kolkata : Modeling is not just about looks, but it's also about attitude and fitness. Can you share your fitness regime and how you keep yourself in shape for your modeling assignments?
Hakon: Exercise has pretty much always been a part of my life. I started training with weights for the first time when I was 16 years old. And have since continued with it. It's my alone time. I work out in the gym about 6 times a week, mostly in the morning before I start the day. I try to eat healthy during the week, but also enjoy myself on the weekends. Something that I think is also important.
Retro Kolkata : How has your Scandinavian background influenced your career, both in terms of the opportunities you've had and the ways in which you approach your work?
Hakon: I think my Scandinavian background has helped me a bit. I think, in general, the Scandinavian influence on the modeling industry has been characterized by a focus on authenticity, diversity, sustainability, and an understanding of the unique beauty of individuals. And I also think the "viking trend" after TV shows like The Vikings, with a focus on the Scandinavian countries, has helped me a bit. With a beard and tattoo popularity.
Retro Kolkata : What challenges have you faced in the modeling industry, and how have you managed to overcome them?
Hakon: The biggest challenges that I have faced in the modeling industry have to be during the Covid-19 period. Where everything stood still. Productions and commercials were cancelled, it was difficult to travel, and there were few jobs.
Retro Kolkata : As a model, you have a significant influence on trends and style. Are there any specific fashion trends you love, or any you wish would make a comeback?
Hakon: I tend to love multiple trends and styles based on what I'm doing and where I'm going. I love a slightly rugged, dressed-down laid-back style, but can also appreciate a dressed-up style. And I love the idea of the focus on eco-friendly and sustainable fashion, ethically produced and environmentally conscious clothing. The idea of making a difference.
Retro Kolkata : Lastly, what are your future plans in the modeling industry? Are there any specific brands or designers you're hoping to work with, or any new directions you'd like to take your career in?
Hakon: I would have loved to work with Tom Ford one day. And who knows, it might happen. I will keep working as long as it is fun and as long as people want to work with me. But one thing I have learned in this industry is that you never know what's around the corner.
